Methodology

How AnswerRoute measures AI answer ranking

AnswerRoute measures repeated answer snapshots across prompts, AI engines, brands, citations, and time. The goal is to turn AI visibility into evidence that can be tracked, optimized, and rechecked.

What AI answer ranking means

AI answer ranking tracks how brands, products, websites, and sources appear inside AI-generated answers. It is different from traditional SEO because the measured unit is not only a ranked URL. It is the generated answer: mentioned brands, answer rank, cited sources, competitor context, and historical change.

Core metrics

AI answer ranking

Tracks whether a brand appears inside an AI-generated answer and whether it is ordered in a ranked list, table, or recommendation set.

Visibility score

Combines entity recognition, ranked recommendations, cited source coverage, and gap reduction into a directional score.

Mention rate

The share of answer snapshots where a brand is mentioned at least once.

Citation rate

The share of answer snapshots where a brand domain or supporting source is cited.

Average rank

The average position of a brand in snapshots where the answer provides an ordered recommendation.

Measurement workflow

Prompt selection

Build a prompt universe from category terms, best-tool prompts, competitor alternatives, comparisons, how-to questions, and API or data intent.

Answer snapshots

Store prompt, engine, timestamp, answer summary, cited domains, mentioned brands, and parsed ranking evidence.

Volatility handling

Treat a single answer as one snapshot, then compare repeated runs over time instead of claiming a permanent fixed rank.

Update frequency

Use 7-day and 14-day rechecks for early experiments, then expand to weekly or monthly tracking by category.

Limitations

AI answers vary by engine, region, time, model, retrieval sources, prompt phrasing, and citation availability.
